229 A Guide to Mind-Body Wellness

Robert Hedaya • Friday Morning

Robert HedayaEven though we recognize that bodily systems and physical habits hugely influence cognition, emotion, and behavior, therapists still tend to practice without taking the body into account, as if the locus of human psychology exists only in the mind. In this workshop, you’ll get a solid primer on the influence of seven bodily systems—immune, digestive, neuroendocrine, energy regulation, toxin elimination, genetics, and epigenetics—on mental health.

You’ll learn:

  • A simple clinical assessment procedure you can use without medical training to broaden the range of physiological factors and lifestyle issues you consider in developing a treatment plan
  • How to enlist clients into changing unhealthy habits
  • Clinically essential information about the impact of hormones, oxidative stress, thyroid imbalances, free radicals, infections, toxic substances, and various environmental factors in your clients’ mental and physical lives
  • Alternatives to treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and ADD without medication

Robert Hedaya, MD, DFAPA, is the founder of the National Center for Whole Psychiatry, and clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital. He’s the author of Understanding Biological Psychiatry and Depression: Advancing the Treatment Program.
