222 Blue-Collar Therapy

Steven Stosny • Friday Morning

Steven StosnyIt’s a pervasive myth that insight alone will magically transform deeply settled habits of mind and behavior. In fact, therapy that’s focused on emotional exploration and vibrant catharsis can often make the client’s problems worse. Therapeutic change requires a concerted “blue-collar” work effort that instills new habits and positive relationships that align with clients’ deepest values.

This workshop will present a treatment model based on:

  • Recognizing the fundamental role of practice and repetition in creating new positive emotional habits to replace dysfunctional ones
  • Replacing old responses to emotional triggers with new alarm-assessment-improvement sequences
  • Understanding how to apply the concept of state-dependent learning and the newest developments in learning theory to the challenges of clinical practice

Steven Stosny, PhD, is the director of Compassion Power. He’s the author of Love without Hurt and the coauthor of How to Improve Your Marriage without Talking about It. His forthcoming book is Living and Loving after Betrayal: How to Heal from Emotional Abuse, Deceit, Infidelity, & Chronic Resentment.
