209/309 Dependency in Trauma Treatment

Kathy Steele • Friday All Day

Kathy SteeleOne of the challenges of treating trauma patients is establishing a secure attachment without allowing the therapeutic relationship to tip into disempowering dependence. This workshop will help you recognize signs of unhealthy dependency on the therapist and what you can do to bring it back into the realm of a more empowering therapeutic connection.
Specifically, you’ll learn:

  • The differences between adaptive and unhealthy dependency, and secure attachment and dependency
  • Guidelines for establishing boundaries and setting limits that encourage a felt sense of security
  • Specific strategies to support secure attachment and ease the client’s yearnings or demands for caretaking by the therapist

This session will continue with workshop 309.

Kathy Steele, MN, CS, is in private practice and is clinical director of Metropolitan Counseling Services in Atlanta, Georgia. She specializes in chronic trauma, dissociative disorders, attachment, and managing therapeutic impasses.
