406/506 One Couple, Two Therapists

Richard SchwartzTerry RealRichard Schwartz & Terry Real • Saturday All Day
If you’ve ever wondered how two therapists with strikingly different theories and clinical styles would treat the same couple, this is your chance to see that played out. You’ll view and discuss excerpts from a videotaped couples sessions, conducted by two well-respected therapists with the same couple. Where one therapist believes in “joining through the truth” and the value of coaching clients, the other calls himself a “hope merchant,” believing clients posses an inherent wisdom that can be released when conditions are safe enough. Similarly, while one therapist focuses on treating the present situation without first delving into past traumas, the other sees early trauma experiences as the necessary context for understanding how to make change happen. You’ll see for yourself how the client couple responded to the two therapists’ contrasting approaches and have plenty of time to ask questions in this unusual and provocative session. (This session will continue with Workshop 506.)
