Positively Controversial--Ehrenreich’s Book is causing a Stir

Barbara Ehrenreich’s 2009 book about the intricacies of positive psychology--which she doesn’t think is such a positive contribution to the country--has evoked strong emotions from its readers.

An excerpt from her book, Bright Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America was included in the March/April issue of the Networker. Last week, this excerpt was placed online last week on Alternet.org, an alternative online magazine.

The AlterNet webpage directed readers to e-mail their thoughts and comments to our Networker Letters inbox, which many did. The reactions to this excerpt, which focuses on a critical interview with positive psychology founder Martin Seligman, range widely but most responses are pretty strong.

Some reactions include: “Bravo Barbara--as a shrink for 35 years, I can vouch for his (Seligman’s) concepts being a crock!” and another that says that her article uses “sophistic reasoning and self-serving use of ‘science.’” Another reader said that Ehrenreich “deftly points out some of the faulty logic and flawed science….”

If you’ve read this excerpt--or the whole book--what do you think?
