I have lived this process in my own psychotherapy over more than 10 years with a gifted therapist who has helped me enrich my life.
I’m glad Siegel points out the mind brain duality, but his definition of mind (regulation of information and energy flow)is not satisfying to me. I do think the brain is some kind of antenna for the mind, but our current understanding of exactly what the mind is beyond present day psychotherapy and neuroscience. FHW Meyers in the late 1900s said that the brain may filter or shape consciousness from some more comprehensive, profound source, making it personally useful to the individual. Quantum physics talks about “non local space” that may better express this larger Self from which we extrapolate our personal selves or minds.
I’m enjoying this conversation and laughing. 30 years ago (& lasting for nearly 20), I taught, nationally, a workshop called, “72 Ways to Flirt” & one called, “Guerrilla Dating Tactics.” During those classes, I felt I had come upon something useful &, for me, original: The payoff was to focus on the space BETWEEN, while monitoring and considering the space inside. Over & over I said it and worked to get my students to understand relational space as the place where the action is. The betweeness–concentrate there. Many ‘got it’ and it eased anxiety and increased presence, in some, rather dramatically. I received many wedding invitations and baby photos, and I was happy. It continues to be the way I work, and your conversations remind me how much I love my job and how much more there is to learn. Thank you.
